What is climate neutral hosting?

Our hosting partners have entrusted the renowned climate consulting company ClimatePartner with an extensive, ongoing study to establish the amount of CO2 emissions caused by the server hosting services during the course of one year. The power consumption of the servers plays an important part, but other company activities like travelling to and from work of all employees, business trips or heating costs for the offices pollute the environment with harmful CO2 emissions..

Climate neutrality aims at counterbalancing these emissions by saving the same amount in some other area. This neutralisation becomes an effective measure for climate protection through the global impact of greenhouse gases. It is of no consequence to the climate protection, where the harmful CO2 emissions are avoided – by avoiding emissions through additional climate protection measures somewhere else you can neutralise the emissions caused by you.

Climate neutral hosting is effected by the operating companies of our hosting platforms through buying ecologically valuable emission reducing certificates for a wind power project in India. By buying the certificates for this wind park, which has been tested and approved according to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), we achieve that the electricity network is supplied with an amount of emission-free energy corresponding to the generated CO2 emissions. The resulting avoidance of a production of additional conventional energy, charged with CO2 emissions, constitues an active contribution to environmental protection by the climatical neutralisation of the server hosting performance.
